6.5yrs of living in Canada, 1year of doing grade 12, 4.5yrs spent in University, countless number of hours spent volunteering and gaining experience and more hours spent working towards landing my first job as a “grown up professional”.
It has been quite an eventful journey, and a lot of the skills that have helped me get to where I am today were ones I acquired when I did the grade 12 program.
I moved to Canada in 2012 with the help of Maple Education and made a decision (actually my parents made the decision) to do grade 12. At first I did not think it was going to be helpful because I had already completed SS3. My 16yr old self thought it was not a “good use “of my time, because I already “knew everything I needed to know” to prepare me for University. A year after completing the grade 12 program, I realized how wrong I was, and I am so grateful that I did the grade 12 program.
In the span of 1 year I learnt quite a few things and I will share my top 3.
Firstly, I acquired and gained a broader knowledge and understanding of Canadian education and curriculum. I learned different ways to study, how to study smart as compared to just “studying hard”, finding different ways to challenge learning and also knowing when to ask for support. This helped me to get and maintain good grades during the program, but more importantly it helped me keep the same standard in University. I was able to spot my academic strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to turn my weaknesses into strengths.
Secondly, doing the grade 12 program did not only give me easy access to the top Canadian Universities, but also access to scholarships which of course helped a lot in cutting down costs for my parents.
Thirdly, I had a lot of time, and acquired information to help me explore a future career. Getting advice and communicating with teachers, professionals and counsellors helped me to realize things that I needed to do to get me to my end goal.
There are no words to explain how tremendously helpful this program was, but I can say that it definitely put me in the right direction, and placed me a few steps ahead of my counterparts who went straight to university.
I am forever grateful that I got the opportunity, and I will encourage you to utilize the opportunity in Nigeria if you have it because one thing that is certain is that You Have Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain.

I got admitted into the Foundation Level/ Grade 12 of North Peace Secondary School in Canada through Maple Education Canada Inc., who acted as my consultants, and have affiliate schools (colleges and universities) across Canada. I am now in York University studying Social Work, and enjoying a scholarship from the school.
Canadian Grade 12 is quite different from what obtains in Nigeria, as it includes, communication, critical thinking and more. Performance is measured by a combination of differently- formatted evaluations which are spread over the tenure of the course.
The opportunity to study at a Canadian Grade 12 College in Lagos will be very useful to students who wish to prepare for Canadian tertiary education and others globally. It offers a more affordable price while still enjoying the comforts of home, familiar surroundings, and a strong network of supportive family and friends.
